MORE than 200 greyhounds could be spotted walking together in Hexham at the weekend.
On Sunday (September 19), Northumberland Greyhound Rescue hosted their Great Global Greyhound charity walk, which saw 210 greyhound and sighthounds turn up to Tyne Green.
The annual Great Global Greyhound charity walk sees individual rescue organisations from all around the world host walks on the same day to promote the breed.
Organiser Jenny Thomas, a volunteer at Northumberland Greyhound Rescue, which is dedicated to re-homing ex-racing greyhounds, said: “This event really gives the opportunity for people to see what fantastic, loving, calm, versatile pets greyhounds make.”
She added: “They were incredibly well behaved. Greyhounds very rarely bark, so unlike lots of dog shows, it was very quiet.”
The event also raised over £1000 for the charity.
Jenny said their Hexham walk saw one of the biggest turnouts in the UK, with participants travelling from as far as Alnwick and Alnmouth.
“It was just phenomenal,” Jenny said. “I think after Covid it was really nice to see people actually get together, and enjoy the pleasures of Tyne Green.”
Northumberland rescue greyhounds looking for new owners joined the walk, and Jenny said they think they have found a home for one on the day.
“What more could we want?” said Jenny.
Following the walk, there was also a free dog show, with certificates, rosettes, and prizes.
Northumberland Greyhound Rescue, which was formed over 20 years ago, have helped re-home hundreds of ex-racing greyhounds.
