A LUXURY venue that told couples they must pay £10,000 extra or face their wedding being cancelled has said it will reverse the decision after suffering from a huge backlash.

In a U-turn on its decision to hike prices of dozens of pre-agreed weddings, Matfen Hall said it was now hoping to "put things right" and had apologised "unreservedly."

Couples due to get married at the venue, near Hexham, next year were left reeling this week after the venue dispatched identical letters to them all cancelling their booking - unless they’re happy to pay thousands of pounds more than was originally agreed.

Our readers shared their thoughts on the u-turn with some saying it is too little too late.

Steve Orrock said: "The decision to hike their price post covid was the worst marketing decision ever. This will take years to recover from and in future everyone who contemplates booking this venue will be wondering if they are getting a fair deal or not.

"Their competitors such as Slaley Hall, Walwick Hall etc. must be clapping their hands in joy."

Hazel Barclay welcomed the decision and said: "Just as well! Amazing what bad publicity makes greedy people change their mind."

Ainsley Wills shared his thoughts adding: "Probably only gave in after all the bad publicity on social media and local news."

Lorraine Willis replied to Ainsley saying: "Too late i'd say, the damage is done. Bad news travels fast and facebook was inundated yesterday with places advertising their venues for weddings saying thins like there is no minimum cost."

Still angry over the Maften Hall decision to increase costs, Kennith Chapman said: "Boycotting the place, anyway."
