Cumbria Police have charged a man with wounding with intent and possession of a bladed article in a public place after a man was stabbed in Alston on Saturday.

Saul Shepherd, 20, of Alston, was charged with wounding with intent and possession of a bladed article. He appeared at Carlisle Magistrates’ Court this morning and has been remanded to appear at Crown Court on October 12.

Cumbria Police were called shortly after 8.20pm on Saturday to a report that a man had been stabbed in the abdomen outside the Victoria Inn in Alston.

The victim, a man in his 30s from Alston, was taken to Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle. He remains in hospital in a critical but stable condition.

Cumbria Police arrested two men following the incident, a 20-year-old man and a 38-year-old man, both from Alston.

The 38-year-old man has been released under investigation whilst officers continue with their enquiries.
