Hexham and Northern held its weekly sale of 210 Store cattle and suckled calves.

The sale, this week, was predominantly older cattle which sold marvellously well and maintained last week’s high rates. Bullocks were easily sold throughout, as were the plainer, dairy bred sorts.

Once again, native cattle sold extremely easily with Angus x heifers from Mr E Metcalf, Fairly, topping at £1,570. Selling twice to £1,490 were Angus x steers from Messrs E & I Hall & Sons, Hallington New Houses, and Messrs DA & P Burn & Sons, Aydonshields.

Bruce Campbell, of Thrunton, made his way down from North Northumberland with some tremendous pure Charolais and Angus x cattle that sold to £1,420.

Messrs J Carr & Co, Camphill, sold a 16month old Limousin x steers to £1,390.

Making the trip across from Carlisle, Mr S Wood, Arnold House, sold 12 month old Blonde x steers to £1,200.

A catalogued entry of 4,931 store lambs sold to another excellent trade with longer keeping lambs dearer on the week.

Stronger, short keep lambs regularly breaking £100 with longer keeping types in the £80s.

Topping the trade at £172 was a pen of six Texel ewe lambs from JR & A Mews, Chapel House.

Suffolk x lambs topped at £138 from Messrs ML & MD Sparke, Salmonfield.

Mule lambs sold to another good trade with many 2nd & 3rd draw lambs on display. Cowden Partners sold a pen of ten mule lambs to £97.

PRIME Lambs

Scots Gap Auction Mart sold 881 prime and cast sheep at their weekly sale and lamb values were at unprecedented levels for August at this centre. With all classes dearer on the week, the sale averaged 241.1 ppkg and £112.64 per head, delighting all vendors.

Dave Brodie, The Chesters, topped the sale with a pair of super heavy Texel crosses that sold for £145 per head to Ben Gray. A fantastic pen of 23 lambs at 52kg by the same sire sold to the same buyer at £130 from Messrs Johnson, Tuthill. Eight Suffolk cross lambs from Mule mothers sold to £130 from Derk & Vin Milburn, Holling Hill, and a pair of smart Texel crosses at 44kg sold to 272 ppkg from Willie and Martin Woodman from their Bradford holding, Belsay.

Traditionally a heavy butchers lamb centre, The Gap handled some outstanding weighty lambs on the day with almost 90 per cent of the sale comprising of Texel lambs that averaged 46kg and £113 per head. Mule lambs sold to £115 from Edward Potts, Doe Hill whilst Blackies at 42kg sold to £85 from John Armstrong, Grasslees, and a May born Cheviot cross lamb sold to 230ppkg and £90 from grandson Thomas Armstrong.
