Although the weather has been mixed, it hasn’t halted the full programme of events for Hexham lady golfers. There have been many successful results for both individuals and teams and the losses have all been well contested too.

June Lomax has had a very busy month. She played for Northumberland at Alnmouth in the Northern Counties Match Week and also represented Hexham as our England Golf Medal Winner 2019 at Ringway GC in Manchester.

On July 3 many ladies took part in an 11-hole competition as part of Adrian Jarman’s Captain’s Day, with Anne Suddes taking the honours.

The much-delayed Betty Hindhaugh final was won by Paula Forster and Jennifer Hermann in a close match against Joan Smith & Anne Livesey.

Evelyn Henderson entertained ten past presidents on a lovely day in early July. They began with a pitch & putt competition, which was won by Margaret Dowdeswell, and then adjourned for a very pleasant lunch.

Sadly the Norah Percy team went out in the semi-final of their competition at the difficult Longhirst Hall course but the TR Percy team have enjoyed greater success and will play Morpeth in the final at Newbiggin on September 7.

As the season runs towards its close, all three league teams are approaching their final matches. Hopefully the fine form achieved in previous games will be maintained until the end.

Janet Purdey and Jennifer Hermann played in the Durham v Northumberland County Vet’s Match at Tyneside Golf Club which resulted in a 6-0 win for Northumberland. On Sunday July 18 we hosted the annual 125 Anniversary Silloth Match which Hexham won by a small margin. However, as this is a friendly fixture, the spirit of the game was the true winner.

Hexham Golf Club was honoured to host the inaugural NLCGA Centenary Trophy presented by our most famous (ex) lady member, Margaret Pickard nee Nichol. Margaret played for England and Northumberland in the 1950s to 70s and in 1960 she won the English Ladies Amateur Championship.

l Hexham Golf Club opened their recently refurbished ladies’ locker rooms on Tuesday June 22.

Cllr Derek Kennedy was welcomed to the club by Lady Captain, Jennifer Herrmann, to see how the grant from the Local Improvement Fund had helped to make the renovations possible.

Cllr Kennedy said: “I was happy to provide support for the refurbishment of the Ladies’ Locker room, I hope this makes the area a lot more comfortable and welcoming”.

Generous donations to the club for the project were also made by members and from the ladies section fundraising activities.

The ladies’ golf teams are among several success stories in the club, with their first team continuing their successful run. Prior to the coronavirus lockdown, they won the first division of the Northumberland leagues consecutively for four years.

Among those from throughout the membership, June Lomax and Val Robinson will both play for Northumberland in county representative matches this summer.

The support from Cllr Kennedy is greatly appreciated by the club as it continues to encourage the development of women’s and junior golf in the community by upgrading the facilities offered on and off the course.
