IT'S SUPPOSED to be pretty poor and unpredictable weather for most of the day.  Here's what to do instead of that walk you were planning.

Hexham Abbey

When was the last time you went inside Hexham Abbey instead of just walking past it?  If you're anything like me, it's not too recently.  The history of the Abbey goes back to the 7th century, before England was united and Northumbria was still a kingdom.  It's one of the earliest bastions of Christianity in England and therefore hugely historically important.  From the Saxon Crypt, to the Roman tombstone or the beautiful stained glass windows.

Swimming

Go to your local leisure centre with the kids for a swim.  It's an invaluable skill for them to have and they'll have a great time splashing around.  If you're feeling particularly out there, you could even visit Haltwhistle Swimming and Leisure Centre, which has three outdoor pools.  Does the rain matter if you're getting wet anyway?

Hexham Library

The library at Hexham is a beautiful place to relax on a rainy day.  After under-going a revamp in 2018, the modern interior juxtaposes with the historic Queen's Hall building it's located inside. Check out a book or admire the architecture inside for a cheap and fulfilling morning or afternoon activity.

Catch up with a friend

Why not visit Small World Café, which just won a Tripadvisor Travellers' Choice Award!  The Travellers’ Choice Award celebrates restaurants that consistently deliver fantastic experiences to travellers around the globe and is awarded to the top 10% of restaurants and cafés globally.

Have a lazy day

Stick on the Olympics, get a brew and relax.  Dina Asher-Smith, the fastest ever British woman, is competing for a medal at 13:50 as long as she gets through the semi-finals at 11:15 and even when it's not a GB athlete, it's fun to watch the highest-quality athletes and sportspeople compete at the toughest level.
