AS the Tokyo 2020 Olympics get underway, we take a look at the sporting talent on our doorsteps here in Tynedale.
The Olympic games were officially declared open on Friday (July 23) by Japan’s Emperor Naruhito.
It comes after the sporting event was cancelled last year due to the coronavirus pandemic - marking the first time the tournament had been postponed.
Volunteer-led Sports Tynedale also did not hold its prestigious awards evening for the first time in almost 50 years.
However, the organisation, formerly Tynedale Sports Council, hosted a virtual event to recognise those who kept up their chosen sports during an unprecedented year.
The awards seek to support and promote sportspeople across the Tyne Valley in their chosen disciplines.
