A Prudhoe resident is taking on a challenge to raise money for cancer.

Gordon McIntosh (86) is walking the length of Hadrian’s Wall one mile a day to raise money for Cancer Research UK.

Gordon walked the full 84 miles of Hadrian’s Wall path in 2005 to mark his successful treatment for prostate cancer. However, 16 years later he will not be walking along Hadrian’s Wall itself, but rather one mile a day for the same distance at Tyne Riverside Country Park in Prudhoe.

Gordon rediscovered Tyne Riverside Country Park earlier this year when doing a daily sponsored walk throughout May. He raised over £1,000 for mental health charity MIND in memory of son Ross’s colleague Lou Gardner, an artist who took her own life earlier this year.

Mr McIntosh’s latest walk has been dedicated to his wife Ann, who died of oesophageal cancer in 2019, and son Ross’s sister-in-law, Ima, who also died of cancer in Spain a year later.

Gordon said: “I have been lucky. I’ve been in remission from prostate cancer for 19 years. Whilst I gave something back in 2005 when I walked Hadrian’s Wall the hard way, I felt I wanted to give something back again as my wife died of cancer.”

He continued: “I’m 25 miles in and have got up to 84 to go. I’m finding it okay – I’m enjoying it! I have got more ethan£300 from various kind people. I hope to raise more than £1,000 as I did in 2005.

“I’m 86 and I’m terribly lonely without my wife. People are very kind and I’m so pleased to make contact with the people I see, as well as their dogs. I love to see people with their dogs. I’m meeting a lot of nice people and it’s lovely.”
