Cast sheep topped at £144 for a Texel Ram and at £120 for a ewe from Messrs Watson, Dykehead.

Hexham & Northern Marts offered for sale a smaller catalogue of 96 store cattle at their weekly sale. No fewer than 29 buyers assembled at the ringside and levels were maintained for an increasingly mixed show of quality.

The sale peaked at £1,600 for a superb Charolais cross heifer from Willie Woodman, Great Chesters, who sold 14 at 18 months to average £1,365 throughout. Steers topped at £1,380 for a smart Angus cross bullock at the same age which led the run from Jeff Bennison, Warden Law, Houghton Le Spring,that averaged £1,322 for four sold.

Of the younger classes, the leading lights were a super pen of 12-14 month old Limmy bullocks from Messrs Sparke, Little Swinburne, that topped at £1,250 and averaged £1,108 for nine sold.

Cows have stepped up a gear in Hexham with trade stronger on the week, especially the better end of cows. Three cows broke the £1,500 mark this week. Highest grossing cow came from Messrs A & D Proctor, Swarland Old Hall, who were left delighted at their days trading selling a pure Limousin Cow to £1,578.10. Only £4 shy of this was an ex Show Beast from JW Smith Jackson, High Town. This Limousin cow realised £1,574.06 and took the top PPKG honours, selling to 199.5p to Mr G Chapman, West Knowe.
