A Tynedale celebrity will join on of radio’s top slots when she takes over the wheel of the Radio 1 Drivetime show.

Vick Hope will join Jordan North to co-host the teatime spot from September after presenter Nick Grimshaw announced he would be leaving the show.

The pair of Northerners will step into the role from ‘Grimmy’ who has hosted the teatime show since 2007

Announcing his departure, he told listeners: “My childhood dream was to work on Radio 1 and I have been lucky enough to make that dream come true.

“It has been everything I’d imagined and even more.”

Vick, a former Capital Radio presenter who has also appeared on Strictly Come Dancing, said: “What madness! Drivetime!

“I love Radio 1 so, so, much, having grown up tuning in religiously every single day, it means the world to be taking the reins at home-time with the phenomenal Mr North.

“Grimmy is an absolute legend of the game – thank you mate for every laugh you’ve sent rippling through the country.

“Taking over Drive isn’t a task we will be taking lightly, but Jordan and I are ready to put our all into making your journey home a little brighter.”

Vick and Jordan will host the show from 3.30pm to 6pm from September 6, after Nick Grimshaw’s final show on August 12.

She joined Radio 1 last September as co-host of Radio 1’s Life Hacks on Sundays between 4pm and 6pm, and The Official Chart: First Look on Radio 1 on Sundays between 6pm and 7pm.

It is understood Vick will continue to co-host her regular appearances, while joining Jordan North through the week.

Following the announcement, Aled Haydn Jones, Head of Radio 1, said: “I am so excited for Vick and Jordan.

“The audience have taken to both of them over the last year so its a dream to be able to bring them together to host such an important radio show in Radio 1’s schedule.

“I can’t wait for people to hear some of the ideas and projects they’ve got lined up – they’re really pushing the boundaries of what we can do.

“September is going to be a new sound for Radio 1, from establishing great broadcasters to bringing through the next generation of talented DJs, we will continue to reflect our young audience across the UK and have a lot of fun doing it.”

Vick lived near Minsteracres, and attended Dame Allan’s School in Newcastle, before going on to Cambridge to study languages. Her brothers attended Hexham’s QEHS.
