A HEXHAM student has been selected to compete at the UK finals of a science and engineering competition after his project caught the eye of judges.

Year 12 pupil Kell Johnston, of Queen Elizabeth High School, will now take his place in this year’s finals of The Big Bang UK Young Scientists & Engineers Competition.

Kell’s project ‘Does willow extract have a beneficial impact when rooting cuttings?’ aimed to determine whether willow water extract could be used to promote root growth for a range of different plant cuttings.

Dr Hilary Leevers, chief executive of EngineeringUK, said, “Kell really impressed the judges with his project and we’re excited to see how he does at the UK finals.

“It is a huge achievement to progress to this stage of the competition and Kell should be incredibly proud to take up his place and compete this year.”

The winner will be announced on June 23.
