HEXHAM & Northern Marts offered for sale a smaller entry as is common at this time of year totalling 188 head of store cattle at their weekly sale. Despite a very mixed show of quality, all classes were dearer on the week peaking at £1,505 for an older, shapely Charolais heifer which lead the run this week from Willie Woodman, Great Chesters. Limousin cross bullocks from the same home sold to £1,500 as did another Charolais heifer which contributed towards a satisfying average of £1,373 for 16 steers and eight heifers from the noted Roman Wall-based producer.

Messrs Carr, Camphill ,sold a super shapely Limousin cross steer at 16 months for the same £1,500 tariff and a smashing Blue cross at the same age which scaled to £1,380. As always, Angus cross cattle featured highly in the sale and peaked at £1,380 for a hefty square heifer from Messrs Baty, Catreen, whilst another climbed to £1,350 for another family of the same name, this time Messrs Baty, North Acomb Farm, who were delighted with the trade for their heifer consignment.

A super pen of well-grown Angus cross bullocks at 12-14 months of age were brought down from the Alston fells by Messrs Carrick, High Crossgill, and their journey to Hexham was well rewarded peaking at £1,280 and averaging £1,225 for six well-bred and quiet natured cattle by the black sire.

With numbers now easing it is imperative that those with cattle still to sell contact our auctioneers to ensure entries are made at the most opportune juncture to maximum return when cattle reach the sale ring. In addition, the monthly sale of beef breeding cattle will also be held Friday, June 11at the conclusion of store cattle sale.
