NORTHUMBERLAND leaders are reminding the public not to drop their guard against coronavirus.

It comes as the Indian variant has now been detected in the county.

Liz Morgan, director of public health in Northumberland, said: “This is a reminder to us all that Covid is still with us and that we should all continue to be cautious to protect our families, friends and communities.

“Remember to follow the Hands, Face, Space, Fresh Air guidance; come forward for both doses of the vaccine as soon as you’re offered it; self-isolate and book a PCR test straight away if you develop symptoms; and make use of lateral flow device self-testing kits to ensure you aren’t spreading Covid without realising it.

“While Covid rates in the region are relatively low, we want to keep driving the figures down. We can all play a part in this by taking these simple precautions when we’re going about our daily lives - particularly when meeting friends and family indoors.”

Hexham MP Guy Opperman added: “Our best protection against the Indian variant of Covid-19, as well other variants is to get vaccinated. Over the coming weeks, more and more people will be eligible to get vaccinated. As soon as you get called, get the jab so we can keep Covid under control and get back to a normal way of life.”

Northumberland County Councillor Gordon Stewart, who represents Prudhoe South, has also warned the public: “This variant, which is now in the region, is particularly worrying as it can be transmitted faster than previously detected ones. I urge everyone to continue to abide by experts’ advice such as the wearing of face masks and keeping a safe distance from others and to sanitise regularly.

“The vaccine roll out has been phenomenal but it does not protect people completely even if you have had both doses and it’s important to remember you can still spread the virus.”
