A new garden and landscape supplies business is already proving a popular addition to a town in the Tyne Valley.

Haltwhistle Garden and Landscape Supplies only opened a number of weeks ago, however has already grown both in size and popularity since it begun trading.

“My mum and dad are gardeners and (I thought) if I’m I’m taking them away for plants, then how many others are doing the same?” said Suzanne Hall, who manages the business.

“How many people can’t get lifts anywhere?”

Suzanne, who has worked with owner of the business Eddie Wannop in the past, explained how the new venture came about.

“When I came back to work for Eddie, he asked what does Haltwhistle need and we thought a garden shop,” explained Suzanne.

“Okay, (let’s) see how it goes,” was his response - this was in October 2020.

“I started researching and then sourced compost and plants and garden supplies, then in April we had the polytunnel built and by the bank holiday in May, we had plants too.”

Although the business has only been open a few weeks, Suzanne admitted that the she has been delighted with the support she has received so far.

“Since opening, we have had excellent feedback on the quality and price of our plants and products and many people have also said that this is exactly that Haltwhistle needs and have wished us success,” said Suzanne.

“Many have seen us on Facebook and Instagram and also many (know about us) through word of mouth. We’re now working on potential ideas to grow.

“Plants, compost, garden pots, supplies, and Indian paving are our most popular products, along with our top soils and garden gravel.”

“This is something I’m doing for Haltwhistle. I have even been extremely surprised as to how busy we’ve been since opening.”

“Many people have asked us for specific plants amongst other things and if we haven’t got them in stock we will try our best to get it.

The business has also been helping the local community and has donated a number of items to organisations around the local area as Suzanne explained.

“With Eddie’s support, HGLS has donated garden supplies to Haltwhistle Academy, Henshaw and Gilsland schools as well as Haltwhistle Swimming and Leisure Centre and also Little Stars,” she said.

Haltwhistle Garden and Landscape Supplies is open Monday to Friday between 9am and 5pm. On Saturdays they are open between 9am and 4pm and on Sundays they are open between 10am and 4pm.
