A Hexham teenager has been named in the GB squad for an upcoming world championship.

Jonny Henderson (16) will represent Great Britain in the 13-19 men’s group event at the 2021 FIG Acrobatic Gymnastics World Age Group Championships, which are set to take place in Geneva, Switzerland, from June 23 to 29.

Though Jonny was selected alongside teammates Sam Stafford, Marcus Winship and Aaron Greally last year, the event was cancelled due to Coronavirus.

Lorna Henderson, Jonny’s mum, said: “I’m very proud of him because he’s shown resilience and kept going throughout the disruption of last year.

"When the championships were postponed in 2020, he had to retrial to be selected – and he wasn’t able to train during the first lockdown.”

Sadly, Lorna will not be able to cheer Jonny on from the arena. She said: “It’s disappointing, but Switzerland is on the Amber list so it wouldn’t be fair on my colleagues in the NHS.”

Lorna and Jonny have also expressed their gratitude to the Sport Tynedale Development Fund for its support and grant towards attending the championships.
