Just eight new cases of coronavirus have been confirmed in Northumberland within the latest 24 hours.

News of the new cases – released by the government – means that a total of 17,581 positive cases of Covid-19 have been confirmed in the region since the pandemic began last March.

Also no further deaths have been confirmed in Northumbria Healthcare hospitals within the latest 24 hour period, meaning the death toll in the region remains at 729.

In both the Tyne Valley and Ponteland, no wards currently feature more than five positive cases of Covid-19.

Yesterday Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced step three of the country coming out of lockdown, with indoor venues being able to open their doors from May 17.
