Sports clubs from across the North East have this afternoon paid tribute to Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, who has died at the age of 99.
Prince Philip died peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle and people across the region have offered their condolences throughout the afternoon.
Newcastle United were one of the first to react to the sad news and wrote on Twitter: “Everyone at #NUFC is saddened to learn of the passing of His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.
Another club to pay tribute to the duke was Hexham FC who tweeted: “We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.
“Our thoughts are with Her Majesty The Queen and her family.”
Another of the region's sports organisation to pay tribute to the Duke was the Northumberland FA who said:
“Everyone at Northumberland FA is saddened to learn of the death of His Royal Highness Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.
Our thoughts are with Her Majesty the Queen and the Royal Family at this sad time.”
