POLITICAL figures in the Tyne Valley have paid tribute to the Duke of Edinburgh. 

Buckingham Palace announced at lunchtime that Prince Philip had died at the age of 99. 

Coun. Gordon Stewart, who represents Prudhoe South on Northumberland County Council, said: "I know that residents of Prudhoe will be Saddened to hear about the death of Prince Philip.

"A man that has played a big part in keeping the spirits high through some very challenging times. God Save the Queen."

Hexham town councillor Cath Homer, who also represents Hexham East on Northumberland County Council, said: "Terribly sad news from Buckingham Palace announcing the death of HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.

"Forthright and steadfast, he has been an ever present support to our Queen and our country, and leaves a strong legacy for young people alongside his involvement with many charities across the country. Rest in peace, sir."

Coun. Glen Sanderson, Leader of Northumberland County Council, said: "It is very sad news. We have lost a very fine member of our Royal Family. Quick to serve, strong in nature, and wholly loyal he was an example to us all. He will be greatly missed."
