READERS of the Hexham Courant online took to social media to share their views on a letter: 'Will McDonald's pay for an anti-litter campaign in Hexham?' The letter also referenced Lidl.

DAVE STIVY SAID: "It's time to move with the times people of Hexham. McDonald's use their staff to conduct litter patrols around their venues so shouldn't have to pay for anything further. I would suggest that the public actually start and take responsibility for their actions and use the supplied bins or take their rubbish home with them rather then just dumping wherever they feel - solve the problem at source with some well placed fines by the council. Two national businesses coming to the town can only be a good thing as it brings in much needed money to the area rather than people travelling away. Please don't try to tell me that people of Hexham and surrounding areas do not drop litter as it is evident all around and is a blight on our beautiful area. Stop trying to blame the company and start looking at the real problem...the alleged great British public!"
