I was astounded by the letter from Peter Gallagher of London.
Does he know the area he refers to, as he seems to think that Ovingham is a town?
The bridge may appear precarious but would presumably be closed by Northumberland County Council engineers if it was unsafe.
A bridge capable of taking heavier traffic would be wholly inappropriate due to the roads in Ovingham (a small village, in case Mr Gallagher is unaware).
I doubt that residents of Ovingham would particularly welcome heavier traffic using their village as a shortcut to some mystery destination.
The Tyne crossing near Riding Mill is a perfectly adequate west-bound route, or the A695 east-bound via Blaydon.
There are plenty of transport schemes to be getting on with in the North-East without adding this to the list.
