A MOTORIST has admitted causing the death of a much-loved former headteacher at a Hexham special school.

At Newcastle Crown Court this week, Steven Armstrong (64), of Tudor Avenue, North Shields, pleaded guilty to causing the death of Michael Thompson by careless driving on Billy Mill Avenue, in North Shields, on April 8 last year.

Mr Thompson, who was headteacher at Hexham Priory School for 23 years until his retirement in 2018, was knocked off his bike by Armstrong's vehicle, and died from the injuries he sustained.

Under Mr Thompson's leadership, Hexham Priory School grew from 20 pupils when he started in January 1995 to 104 pupils during his retirement year.

Armstrong will be sentenced for the crime at Newcastle Crown Court on June 3.
