A COUNTY councillor is hoping to revive the high street with a voucher scheme.

Coun. Gordon Stewart, who represents Prudhoe South which includes the town's front street, is giving away shopping vouchers, introduced by Prudhoe Traders Association last year, to encourage people to shop locally.

Gordon bought several vouchers and gave them away to winners of competitions he ran on his social media feeds in 2020. One of the questions was 'what is the best street in Prudhoe for community involvement', the overwhelming winner was Stanley Crescent.

He said: "It was very popular with the public and traders then and I intend to run it again as the restrictions are lifted, hopefully it will have the desired effect of increasing footfall in the town.

"We have a great range of businesses across the town, not just on front street. We are finding that many more people are seeing the benefits of a vibrant town, helping to retain and, hopefully, increase the range of local jobs.

"It is hoped that the pocket park proposal will also be a great boost for the town, helping to make local people proud of Prudhoe."

It comes after a Rightmove study saw home buyer searches for the town surge by 22 per cent in January.
