CONCERNS have been raised that large lorries are causing disruption by passing into Barrow town centre down a residential street.

Heavy goods vehicle are said to be travelling down Holker Street on the way to delivering items to town centre businesses.

Hindpool councillor Anne Burns said it was causing problems for residents 'day in day out' and could get worse with a large housing development due to be constructed opposite Barrow AFC's ground.

Raising the point at a meeting of Cumbria County Council's local committee for Barrow, she said: "There are a lot of big lorries that come into the town centre coming down Schneider Road onto that bridge and down Holker Street to get into the back of Dalton Road or wherever they need to deliver to.

"That is causing so many problems with the traffic calming that is currently on Holker Street.

"When the traffic calming was done on the street none of the businesses were there.

"We've still got a lot of residential property on the street and residents are living with this day in day out. And it doesn't stop on a Sunday.

"So I am asking the highways manager to have a look at this to see what we can do about this situation."

The meeting heard imposing restrictions on vehicles travelling down the street could be difficult with any measures needing to be enforced by the police.

Highways network manager Keiron Tetchner said in response: "Any restrictions would be enforced by the police and there are a couple of businesses that would be exempt.

"Enforcing them would be quite difficult because police would have to follow a vehicle and see where it's going.

"As part of the housing development they will have to put in a construction plan which our team will look and control access to the site because they shouldn't be using Holker Street.

"I do agree that Holker Street has changed over the years and become a much busier road and whether it should be is debatable."
