Readers have reacted after it was announced that a £150,000 scheme aims to improve safety on a stretch of the A590.

Work is set to start next month to stop vehicles turning right onto the A590 from the bridge at the Swan Hotel at Newby Bridge.

County councillor Sue Sanderson said she had been working to sort this "dangerous" situation for around six years as drivers in cars turning often find themselves stranded on a bend.

Work is due to start on or shortly after February 8 for approximately three weeks and will take place overnight on weekdays only.

The Mail readers welcomed the announcement, saying it was "about time."

Andy Bryan said: "So if they are doing this are they going to sort out the road in front of Newby Bridge petrol station. So many crashes and near misses happen think it needs a speed reduction there to 40mph and a couple of cameras. Might not stop all incidents but would be a start."

Tony Moon said: “There is nothing wrong with that junction more money wasting."

Diane Hardy said: “Great idea. Always go left to roundabout it’s so much easier.”

Christine Johnson said: “About time, had so many close calls there.”

Harry Johnson said: “It’s not the road it’s the drivers on it.”

Jon Hawkins said: “Good. Now if we can just get the junction at Sowerby industrial estate and the one at Ormsgill sorted that would be great. The road is too busy not to have proper traffic control like a roundabout."

Samantha Griffiths said: “Don’t no why it would cost 150k though. Paint an arrow and stick a sign up."

Allen Rodgers said in reply: “And then people would just ignore the sign. The article tells you how the road layout and signage will be changed to prevent right turns.”

Carl Rigg said: “Why £150,000?”

Chris Barron said: “What’s wrong with a £50 no right turn sign?”
