The topic of Brexit has prompted plenty of opinions in recent years – and in the House of Commons an important debate on the subject took place recently.

MP Tim Farron's contributions to the debate were reported, but reader George Harrison felt the view of Lord Cavendish of Furness warranted credit too.

A letter sent to The Mail by Mr Harrison, of Cartmel, said: "In the House of Commons on December 30 last an important debate took place regarding this country’s future relationship with the European Union.

"The local MP Mr Tim Farron took part in that debate and his contribution was reported in your columns in some depth the following morning.

"Simultaneously the same topic was being debated in the House of Lords during which Lord Cavendish of Furness put forward an alternative view in a valedictory speech, well received on all sides of the House.

"His involvement did not appear in your columns the following day nor in the following week’s edition of the Gazette.

"Is not His Lordship’s contribution deserving of equal prominence?"
