Chief Inspector Gaynor Wardle, South Cumbria Territorial Policing Area, said: “Careful consideration is required when attempting to interpret this data as to what type of crime has occurred in a particular area.

“A prime example is that violence and sexual offences, which encompass a wide variety of offences, are collated together under one category.

“This means that the total provided does not differentiate between offences such as assault without injury or something more complex such as homicide.

“Therefore, this can incorrectly provide an impression that more serious crimes are more prevalent in our communities than what has actually occurred.”

“The category of offence with the highest number of reports in each of the Furness localities was assault without injury; in one of the localities detailed this accounted for 45 per cent of crimes recorded,” Chief Inspector Wardle added. “While distressing for those victim to such an offence, many people would not necessarily consider assault without injury as an incident of violent crime.

“Similar to the more serious violent crime offences, the number of sexual offences are among the lowest recorded during this period.

“In one of the localities detailed, sexual offences accounted for five per cent of crimes recorded under the violence and sexual offences category on the police.uk site.

“Last year saw a reduction in overall violent crime in Cumbria; our officers are not complacent about this and they will continue to do all they can to prevent crime and bring offenders to justice.”
