READERS of the Hexham Courant online have reacted to news that the UK is to close all travel corridors from Monday.

At a press conference, Prime Minister Boris Johnson confirmed travel corridors will be suspended from 4am on Monday and anyone who wishes to travel to the UK must have proof of a negative Covid-19 test in the previous 72 hours.

He added that sadly, cancer treatments have been postponed, ambulances are queuing and intensive care units are spilling into adjacent wards as the NHS comes under pressure from the new variant of the virus.

Here's what you had to say.

JENNIE WRIGHT SAID: "How can they justify cancelling cancer treatment and prioritising Covid patients instead? This makes me so mad. If we put half as much effort, time and money into finding cures and treatments for cancers, the NHS wouldn't have been under pressure for years and more lives would have been saved. I'll happily sit at home while they concentrate on that. Before anyone says there's no vaccine for cancer, it's only recently discovered the link between cervical cancer and the hpv virus that does now have a vaccine. How many other cancers might be caused by similar? It's unfair to prioritise treatment and leave people untreated of cancer that would save their life."

DAVID GRAHAM SAID: "Congratulations to our mighty government for introducing travel restrictions 363 days after the start of a global pandemic. Bravo."

STUART WHITFIELD SAID: "Should this not have been done this time last year!"
