HEXHAM has a bright future with over £200m being invested in a multitude of exciting projects.

That's the verdict of the town's Mayor, Coun. Bob Hull, who is determined to ensure the residents and businesses have much to look forward to beyond the coronavirus pandemic.

Coun. Hull issued his rallying call at January's meeting of Hexham Town Council.

The past year has seen bulldozers demolish some of Hexham's historic landmarks, including the old swimming pool on Gilesgate, the former council chamber at Prospect House, and the workhouse site on Corbridge Road.

Building work on housing schemes at those locations is ongoing, while a multi-million pound scheme to redesign the A69 roundabout is well under way.

Consultation is soon to begin on the Heritage Action Zone initiative to breath new life into the town centre, while councillors are also working on developing Hexham as a tourist destination.

And if that's not enough, a hotel, supermarket and a fast food outlet look set to be moving onto the former Bunker site, off Alemouth Road.

Coun. Hull said: "I am aware of at least £200m being invested in the town. Hexham will show its resiliance and bounce back."

Coun. Hull paid tribute to local people for the way they have looked after vulnerable residents during the pandemic.

But he called on them to keep the economy moving by continuing to support local businesses.

"I would encourage people to shop local and give our businesses the support they need in these challenging times."

Hexham was crowned the UK's happiest place to live in a 2019 survey and Coun. Hull has no doubt it will continue to be a happy home for many years to come.
