AN image showing dozens of people sledging at a Hexham park has led to concerns over Covid safety and social distancing.

The image, posted after the weekend's snowfall, on Sunday, showed about 40 people on the hill next to the football pitch on Hexham's Sele.

Like many other areas across the UK, Hexham entered the most restrictive Tier 4 on News Year's Eve.

Local councillors have urged the public not to place too much emphasis on one image, which recorded a single snapshot in time from a distance.

But they have reminded parents and children to take extra care while out exercising in the interests of Covid safety.

Hexham town councillor Cath Homer, who represents Hexham East on Northumberland County Council said: "We all know the rules, and people should be allowed to exercise some judgement.

"Children would want to go sledging in the snow. People can walk into a situation like that and if they feel uncomfortable, walk away.

"We have to do all we can to make sure people know the rules and risks, and allow them to use their common sense."

Fellow town councillor Trevor Cessford, who represents Hexham Central with Acomb, said: "Children will see snow and will no doubt drive their parents crazy wanting to go out in it.

"People are allowed to exercise, but everyone must be responsible in the way we do this.

"Given the Covid situation, people are very very scared. You've got to have plenty of space for social distancing or if there's any doubt, go somewhere else."
