FOR the first time in almost 50 years, a local sports organisation was unable to hold its popular, annual awards ceremony.

Tynedale Sports Council formed in the 1970s to support and promote sportspeople across the Tyne Valley in their chosen disciplines.

The volunteer-led group’s awards ceremony marked individuals and club’s excellent achievements both on a local and national stage, and it quickly became the highlight in the Tynedale sports calendar.

The council was rebranded in 2012 to adopt to more modern times, and the group has gone from strength to strength.

We look back at the first Sport Tynedale (as it is known now) Awards which attracted Hexham rower Matt Wells as guest presenter, fresh from his fifth, and final, Olympics in London in the summer.
