AN ANNUAL Tynedale tradition has caught the eye of people from across the globe.
The Allendale Tar Bar'ls, the most common of a number of ways of saying it, traditionally happens in the village each New Year's Eve.
While Covid-19 restrictions means that it won't go ahead this year, we take a look back at the event in 2014 which attracted hundreds of people to the Allen Valleys.
The tradition sees a group of 'guisers', 45 local men, who carry whiskey barrels filled with burning hot tar through a procession through the village of Allendale.
All guisers dress up for the occasion, and they are helped along their way by large crowds filling the streets.
To become a guiser, men must have been born in the Valleys and agree to wear fancy dress and blacken their faces with soot!
The tradition was believed to have been started more than 160 years ago, and it is still as popular as it was back then.
Do you recognise anybody from our photo gallery from 2014?
