POLICE have released the name of a teenager who was killed in a collision near Gateshead this weekend.

On Saturday shortly before 10pm police received a report of a collision involving a car and a pedestrian on the A694 at Derwent Haugh Park, Blaydon, at the junction with Swalwell Cricket Club.

Critical care nurses who came across the collision worked hard to save the man until paramedics arrived to take over but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The man can now be named as 18-year-old Sam McIver of Winlaton Mill, Gateshead. His devastated family are currently being supported by specialist officers and ask for their privacy to be respected at this time.

Police have re-issued an appeal for information as they investigate the crash.

Sgt Matt Sykes of the Force’s Motor Patrols Department said: “Sam’s family are very much in our thoughts at this extremely sad time and I continue to ask members of the public to respect their privacy.

“We remain committed to establishing the circumstances surrounding this incident and I again appeal to anybody who was in the area around that time to come forward with any information or dashcam footage, as it may prove crucial in determining the circumstances surrounding the collision.”
