MORE cases of coronavirus have been confirmed in the Haltwhistle ward as the virus continues to spread in the Tyne Valley.

The area remains the worst-affected ward in Northumberland over the past week, while neighbouring Haydon and Hadrian is the second.

493 cases of the virus were confirmed in Northumberland in the last seven days - a rate of 153.9 cases per 100,000 residents.

The latest figures from NHS England confirmed that three more patients at Northumbria Healthcare trust hospitals had died after contracting the virus. The total death toll at the trust's hospitals is now 384.

Public Health England also confirmed that a further 85 cases were confirmed across Northumberland yesterday. The total number of lab-confirmed cases in the county since the start of the pandemic now stands at 9,094.

Nationally, the number of people who have died within 28 days of testing positive for coronavirus rose by 533 to 62,566.As of Friday, November 27, 73,125 people had died with COVID-19 on their death certificate.

An additional 16,578 cases of the virus were confirmed across the country yesterday, bringing the total number of lab-confirmed cases to 1,766,819.
