ONE of the district's major routes was blocked after the weight of snow caused a tree to fall down and block the carriageway.

The council's gritting team had a busy night last night, with numerous reports of vehicles stuck north of Elishaw on the A68.

A spokesman for the county council said: "We had numerous gritters out last night in the county and the team received a number of calls and reports of stuck vehicles north of Elishaw.

"This included a tree down because of snow weight, which blocked the A68 near Catcleugh reservoir, which our Highways Team removed, and a couple of stuck lorries.

"The road was re-opened by morning."
