Youngsters from across Northumberland are set to unite for a virtual concert next month.

A live-streamed school music concert is being set up by Music Partnership North, with anyone who can sing or play an instrument encouraged to get involved.

The annual concert hosted by the partnership – which showcases the broad musical talent of Northumberland’s students – cannot take place as normal due to the coronavirus crisis.

However, the determination of the county’s musicians means the show will go on, albeit slightly differently, and will take place on Wednesday, December 16.

Cath McEvoy-Carr, executive director for adult and children’s services said: “Music can play a key part in a child’s learning journey.

“From a young age music can help children fine-tune their motor skills, enhance their social skills and reading music can assist in their core skills.

“Our music partnership offers a great opportunity to our children and young people.

“I am pleased to see that they continue to safely deliver music in our schools for continued learning and are also able to put on a show for us all to enjoy.”

Working with Great Northumberland, Music Partnership North also ran a competition where those not engaged with the partnership could submit a video of themselves performing, giving everyone a chance to shine.

If you sing or play an instrument you can still submit your video for a chance to make it through to the final five performances which will be showcased in the event.

Northumberland County Councillor Guy Renner-Thompson, who is the cabinet member for children’s services said: “This is music to my ears! I am delighted to hear that those musically minded students in our schools still get a chance to showcase their talents.

“With it going online, even those outside the county will get a chance to sit back and enjoy!”
