There have been further changes made to the one-way traffic system implemented in Hexham’s town centre.

The introduction of the scheme by Northumberland County Council, in conjunction with Hexham Town Council, has caused much anger among residents and businesses.

Readers of the Hexham Courant reacted to the latest changes on social media.

Lisa Buchanan said: “Absolutely pointless, puts more pollution in the air all this driving right round Hexham. Utter waste of time.”

Ruth Coombs-Ballard said: “I don’t like it. Traffic goes too fast. It’s a long way around if you’re coming in from the west side of town. And it will put people off using our town centre.”

Roger Higgins said: “One way increases vehicle speeds, so increases the anti-pedestrian feel of Market Street. Ideally there should be no through traffic. Just general access to the centre down Beaumont Street, with Hallstile and the top of Market Street access only. Some traders will have an aneurism, but traffic at the expense of pedestrians in a medieval town centre isn’t the way forward. Place making is.”

Helen-Ruth Westlake said: “Because I have a two-year-old I notice traffic more. I’ve noticed that the cars are travelling much faster past the Abbey and down Gilesgate which are the two roads I regularly cross with my daughter. I wish I could offer a solution but I’m not sure there is one.”

Jo Curry said: “It’s horrendous, I can understand closing Hallstile but to not be able to drive up past the old swimming baths is ridiculous and a hell of a long way round if you’re just popping to the market place.”

Toni Nichola Godwin said: “NIGHTMARE! It’s just something else to keep us out of Hexham, more shops in Kingston Park or Hawick. Unless you want to drive around Hexham to visit 40 charity shops.”

Carol Henderson said: “Sadly it will take an accident, hopefully not a tragedy to see pushing all the traffic down Market Street was a massive mistake.”

Claire Monnelly said: “Still have no idea why it’s in place. What’s the logic behind it?”
