THE physical barriers of lockdown have failed to stop friends and comrades across Europe from joining together.

Hexham has long-standing links with its twin towns Noyon, in France, and Metzingen in Germany.

For years, groups from the three locations have enjoyed international gatherings, hosting cultural and educational visits in each town, and enjoying each other's friendship and hospitality.

All that has changed this year, but Mon Richford, chairwoman of Hexham Town Twinning Association, said technology has enabled people in the three countries to communicate online.

She explained: " Technology has become our saviour. Virtual groups now meet over Zoom, with French and German conversation on alternate weeks.

"With participants no longer needing to be Hexham-based, here was a unique chance to bring in Noyon and Metzingen friends and to learn first hand about how lockdown and restrictions were affecting their lives."

The scheme is set to be developed further. For more information about the scheme and to get involved please contact Mon Richford at richfordfamily@yahoo.co.uk or visit the website hexhamtowntwinning.co.uk.
