A POPULAR, family run fish and chip shop celebrated a milestone anniversary this week.

Balls of Prudhoe, on Front Street, which is also home to a restaurant, has marked its 50th anniversary.

And to honour the efforts of owners, Anne and Steve Blakeburn, Hexham MP Guy Opperman teamed up with county councillor Gordon Stewart, who represents Prudhoe South, to present the well-known husband and wife duo with a community champion award.

Mr Opperman receives nominations to his community champions award scheme from community members throughout Tynedale and Ponteland who want to recognise the service of a particular person, charity or business.

Making the presentation of the latest community champion award, the conservative MP said: "This is one of the best parts of being an MP – getting the opportunity to celebrate with, and congratulate, people who are at the heart of their local community.

"Anne and Steve’s fish and chip shop has been serving the people of Prudhoe for fifty years.

"What an amazing milestone, and definitely worth acknowledging and celebrating – they are true community champions!"

Local councillor Gordon Stewart added: "Congratulations to Anne, Steve and the team on reaching this anniversary.

"This community award is hugely deserved.

"Balls is known not just for great food, but also for the warm and friendly welcome the customers receive day in and day out - and they’ve been doing it for half a century."

The couple took over the family business 21 years ago and Anne said her parents would be proud.

"I am very proud, and I think my mam and dad would be very proud that we're still going strong and have kept going, in all that's gone on", said Anne.

As a way of giving back to the community that has supported them over the years, Balls gave cakes to the businesses on Front Street and are hosting a Giveaway Friday, where people who visit the fish and chip shop for a takeaway will win a prize, whether it be fish and chips, afternoon tea, or even prosecco.

The restaurant will close on Thursday, in line with government guidance, but the shop will remain open for takeaway and delivery.

During the first national lockdown, the business remained open to ensure customers still got their fish fix.

The generous couple also lent a helping hand to supermarket key workers at Asda, Gateshead, by donating food when the retailer's restaurant was forced to close.
