Hexham & Northern Marts at their final sale of October offered for sale 394 head of store cattle and suckled calves on the eve of Halloween, and trade was sharper on the week for a very mixed show of quality.

Older, forward bullocks were markedly sharper on the week and topped at £1,380 for a super, black ¾ bred Limousin at 18 months of age, which flew past the £1,300 mark and went on to sell well on the day for the Ridley Family, Shitlington Hall.

Not to be outdone, the Charolais breed followed close behind on the day at £1,360 for a hefty and square ended steer at 20 months from the Hall Family, Hallington New Houses.

Heifers also sold well and peaked at £1,220 twice, both from the same noted producer and weekly consignor to this centre; John Carpenter, Rare Dene, Cornsay. The first was a shapely Charolais cross and this one was followed immediately by an Angus heifer that reached the same tariff.

Two more lots reached the £1,200 mark; the first a well-bred Charolais sister to the aforementioned bullock from William Hall, whilst a sweet, black Limmy heifer, that could easily end up as a suckler replacement, sold to the same figure for a delighted Libby Bertram, Coldwell, Scots Gap.

A super batch of hill-bred, Angus cross steers were brought to Hexham, the annual consignment from Chris & Heather Robson, Redshaw, Elsdon, and peaked at £1,100 for a smart pair, averaging £983 for 20 sold at 16-17 months.

Another annual consignment at this time of year was that of the smart run of charolais cross heifers bred by James Herdman, Edlingham, Newtown, who saw £1,115 for the best at 16 months and averaged £1,072 for his 17 cattle sold on the day.

A smaller entry of younger sorts was presented, however the best of these were Hexhamshire bred cattle from Andrew and Cath Swallow, Dukesfield Hall, who peaked at £1,055 for shapely Limmy cross steers, and £1,010 for the best of the heifer sisters, averaging £1,011 for eight steers and £970 for four smart females.

With a good company ringside, the auctioneers are keen to hear from producers with cattle yet to be sold and would welcome enquiry with a view to consigning cattle for sale at any of our weekly sales. Entries should be with the auctioneers by 10:30am each Monday for inclusion in the weekly catalogue.
