A TEAM of local experts has been appointed to oversee a town's historic regeneration programme.

The Hexham High Streets Heritage Action Zone proposes to revitalise the town's historic centre, making it a more attractive place to live, work, invest in and visit.

The programme will see the introduction of a building grants scheme to repair, improve and repurpose buildings and public spaces in Priestpopple, Battle Hill and Cattle Market.

Last month it was announced that Hexham will receive a £2.4m funding boost from Historic England and partners, including Northumberland County Council, as part of the High Streets Heritage Action Zone programme.

David Coverdale, who will leading overall programme management including a community engagement programme, will also be responsible for co-ordinating partnership arrangements between Northumberland County Council, Historic England, Hexham Town Council and Hexham Community Partnership.

"I will be focussing on working closely with partners, community organisations, businesses and the cultural sector to draw in ideas and develop engaging projects and activities,” he said.

Val Robson, a building conservation officer with the county council, will lead on the implementation of the building grants scheme, which will launch by December.

In her role she will oversee the appointment of an architect to support the development of high-quality building and shop front improvements that will be eligible for grant funding.

Val said: “It is fantastic that Hexham is going to benefit from this investment, particularly as this part of the Conservation Area is in a poor state of decline and the scheme will offer an opportunity to make a visible difference.”

Coun. Richard Wearmouth, cabinet member for business and tourism said the programme will strengthen the authority's focus on market towns like Hexham.
