Store Cattle
Hexham & Northern Marts held their weekly sale of store cattle and offered for sale a sound catalogued entry of 675 head which included over 400 head of native breed types.
The height of the trade occurred within the first ten minutes of the sale with the first into the ring from Willie Patterson, Halton Red House; a big Limmy bullock at 18 months selling to £1400. This was topped by the sale leader a few moments later from Geoff Ogle, Blackburn who sold another hefty sort at the same age to £1430. Mr Ogle sold five all of the same stamp to average £1340 whilst Mr Patterson sold four, including a thick Angus at £1160, averaging £1296 both regular consignors returning home happy after a great days trading.
The best of heifers continue in great demand at Hexham with both suckler breeders and high-end finishers now ever vigilant and on the hunt for shapely types. John Lamb, Town Farm hit the heights this week with a long black Limmy cross lady that would suit either destiny and was cashed at £1310 to top the run of well-bred cattle from Wall.
The main focus of the catalogue on this day was the considerable entry of native breed cattle and with many breeds represented it was once again the Angus that dominated peaking at £1330 for a hefty black bullock from County Durham producer and Hexham regular, John Carpenter, Rare Dene, Cornsay. Chris and Janet Watmore sent a smart packet by the black bull from the now renowned Holystone Estate that peaked at £1290 twice and averaged £1195 for 11 sold at 18 months of age.
Angus heifers peaked at £1150 from David Wilkinson, New Rift, Acomb with another at £1120 from Messrs Tweddle, Springwell Farm, Satley. Whilst not figuring in the upper echelons of the trade on the day a special mention must go to Kirkley Hall College for their efforts in breeding and drawing a super pen of a dozen heifers in the mid-range age bracket which filled the Hexham ring and sold for a worthy £840 to Messrs Bell of Hemscott Hill, Morpeth.
With increased interest in easily managed, easily fleshed cattle and perhaps niche market beef production the special monthly native sale attracts the full gamut of breeds that originate on these fair isles. The leading prices of those represented on the day as well as the aforementioned Angus were as follows;
Luing cattle sold to £1200 for three steers at 17 months from Andrew Ellis, Thrunton Lowfield; Beef Shorthorns sold to £1145 for a bullock at the same age from Messrs Dodd & Wise, Sillywrea, Langley on Tyne and also to £1040 for the best of a small offering from Mrs Winnifred Campbell, Hopefoot, Otterburn. South Devon cross bullocks again in this age bracket sold at £1140 from John Moore, Wingates Wholme, Morpeth whilst well known amongst all Hexham & Northern customers the Market Foreman; Roy Coe brought out a nice run of Hereford cross steers and in good fettle these peaked at £1090. A Galloway heifer at 17 months sold to £985 from the previously highlighted New Rift Farm and completing the spectrum of native breeds were a rare pen of Murray Gray’s from Coquet Valley enthusiast and annual consignor at this time of year Bill Woolley, West Hepple who sold steers to £965 and heifer sisters to £945.
Demand for all classes continues to be strong at Hexham with buyers for short keep sorts and also those requiring longer term bullocks and heifers for winter housing still active at the ringside. The company conducts sales under a strict set of Covid-19 guidelines and furthermore have invested in infrastructure and ring furniture to ensure the safety of our customers who can attend our weekly sales in confidence.
