HEXHAM'S MP has defended his decision to vote against extending free school meals over the half-term holidays and claimed the reality "couldn't be further from what is being reported".

Guy Opperman responded to calls from constituents to explain his decision after the House of Commons vote to extend free school meals over the half-term holidays, backed by footballer Marcus Rashford, was defeated by 61 votes.

Mr Opperman said: "This government has actually expanded the eligibility of free school meals to a further 50,000 children, and expanded breakfast club programmes.

"The best way to support children of families on low incomes is through a responsive and effective welfare system.

"That is why because of the coronavirus pandemic, the government has increased Universal Credit payments by £1,000 this year, increased the Local Housing Allowance to help low-income families with their rent, and created a £63 million fund for councils to help families struggling to afford food or other essentials."
