THE TYNE Valley isn’t on the usual Great North Run course, but this year’s half marathon was far from normal.

For Jane Mason, of Haydon Bridge, completed a 13.1 mile course in the Tynedale countryside after the event moved to a virtual format.

With no famous finish on the South Shields Coast Road, Jane used her local knowledge and running experience to create her own half marathon race route.

“I started the run at home and went up around Allerwash, Newbrough and Grindon,” Jane explained.

“It was quite hard doing it at home because it’s so hilly, but when I usually do it, it’s the most amazing thing and there’s huge crowds shouting your name and cheering you on. This year I went eight miles without seeing anyone.”

Jane fund-raised for the MS Society - a charity close to her heart - and received support along the way from family and friends.
