A MAN has been charged and is due to appear in court on Monday after a woman was seriously assaulted in the region.

Just after 5.20am on Saturday, officers were called to an address on Stephenson Street, North Shields, after a report that a woman had been attacked.

Emergency services attended and located a woman with serious neck injuries consistent with having been caused by a bladed article.

She was taken to hospital, where she remains, with injuries that are non-life threatening.

A 35-year-old man, located inside the address, was arrested on Saturday by police, and has since been charged in connection with the incident.

Michael Rayner, of Stephenson Street, North Shields, has been charged with wounding with intent to commit grievous bodily harm.

He remains in custody and is due to appear before magistrates in North Tyneside on Monday.
