THE Tyne Valley’s traditional leek shows have been badly hit by the coronavirus pandemic - but the Allen Valley and Kings Head Leek Club show managed to go ahead, albeit without the public part of the show.

And there was a shock in store for local electrician Glenn Nattrass, who - after coming last on two previous occasions - collected the Ellan Ashman Memorial Challenge Cup as leek winner, with his winners measuring 135.19 cubic inches.

Glenn also took home the Brian Golightly Trophy for leeks grown without cover.

Mark Henderson collected the Alf Reader Memorial Salver as Leek Runner up - his leeks coming in at an even larger 139.79 cubic inches.

Bryen Myers came in third, and took home the Allen Valley Leek Club Challenge Cup for the most improved leek grower. His leek came in at 128.35 cubic inches.

Meanwhile, Mickley Leek Club held its annual show last weekend at Mickley Social Club .

Members and locals entered their leeks and other produce to be judged on Saturday.

The show was well attended, although social distancing measures were in place as well as a one-way system in the show room.

The winner of the leek section was Gary Davison with two leeks measuring 199.97 cu ins. Eddie Wilkinson was second with 144.84 cu ins, while Gilbert Barker third with 142.25 cu in.

Despite being unable to host live entertainment the weekend was a success.
