TRAFFIC calming measures on a stretch of a busy Tynedale road have been backed by a parish council.

A petition to improve traffic calming measures on the B6318 road between the George Hotel, at Chollerford, and Chesters Roman Fort, at Walwick, has received more than 200 signatures.

Campaigners say that many road users disregarded the 40mph speed limit and drove without due care and attention.

At its meeting on Thursday, Humshaugh Parish Council agreed to put forward suggested road improvements in its Local Transport Plan.

Resident Katie Demain told councillors that drivers were treating Chollerford "as a Formula One track."

"They charge their way through this village through the night as well as through the day, causing noise pollution and rattling of people's homes," Ms Demain explained.

Campaigners have pledged to install speed indicator signs along the stretch of the road, to introduce a no overtaking zone and to extend the 40mph speed limit beyond Walwick.

Chairman of Humshaugh Parish Council, Coun. Rupert Gibson, said the campaign has the full support of the council, but warned of the potential incremental costs of the speed reduction measures.

"It will be added onto the Local Transport Plan," he said.
