A TYNE Valley golf resort has been named in the top five most popular staycation venues in the UK.

Slaley Hall Hotel, which offers two golf courses and spa facilities, was fourth on a list of venues published by golf holiday firm Glencor Golf.

The firm said that golf resort booking nationwide had doubled from June and September, to the same period last year, with the uncertainty of overseas travel due to the coronavirus pandemic leading to an increase in domestic breaks.

Slaley was fourth behind three big players. The top two were Celtic Manor in the Usk Valley in Wales, and the Belfry in Warwickshire – both former Ryder Cup venues.

In third place was the Forest of Arden. Like Slaley, the Forest of Arden has also hosted European Tour events.

“During the summer, we saw a lot of golfers looking to arrange a last-minute getaway as lockdown measures were eased,” said Corrie Renton, Director at Glencor Golf.

“Booking a UK break was in keeping with the staycation message the government communicated so many people focused on the domestic courses.

“A number of our clients have rearranged their 2020 European breaks for Spring 2021 and then looked to fill the gap with a UK break until international travel returns to normality.

“We are doing everything we can to get our customers to warmer climes in 2020. But we understand that a lot of people are looking for breaks closer to home this year.”
