Ullswater has long been a big hit with visitors for many reasons.

And being able to sail on the still water scores high among that list.

In 1972, this was very much the case as our archives show.

In the gallery, we see Timothy Armitage and William Norman, both of Dalton Avenue, Carlisle prepare the rigging with Carlisle Schools’ Sailing Association’s ahead of getting out on the open water.

Also, a group of fifth year pupils from Carlisle schools who went sailing on Ullswater each Tuesday in 1972 under the leadership of Mr Ian Carr of Morton School. Two boats were supplied St Aidan’s School and one by Morton.

The gallery also shows the importance of knowing about water danger as lifebelts are worn by sailors.

Despite the safety aspect, the look on one young sailor's face tells it all - some people don't like being out on the water!
