A NORTH Cumbrian baker has spoken of her delight after featuring on a prime-time BBC Two cookery show.

Julie Jones, who lives near Carlisle, appeared on the opening episode of Nadiya Bakes on Wednesday night, which is hosted by Great British Bake Off winner Nadiya Hussein.

The series shows off some of her favourite recipes, while also inviting fellow bakers to create some of theirs.

Wednesday's episode was Julie's turn, with her bake of choice a persimmon and grape frangipane tart, which is a sweet shortcrust pastry.

"I was delighted and really pleased," explained Julie. Nadiya is a well-loved baker, so it was nice to be asked."

Julie's journey began five years ago when she started baking to connect with her mum who was diagnosed with dementia.

She soon set up an Instagram page and has since gone from strength to strength. Before lockdown she launched her second cook book The Pastry School, which has already been a success despite the challenges posed by Covid-19.

"My book promotions had to be cancelled and I had to cancel my whole working calender for the rest of the year," she explained.

Despite the challenges, things are now starting to improve.

"I wasn't able to promote it which was disappointing and hard but it is all coming together now. I got through it. You see spikes when things like this happen and you get an increase in followers.

"It will be played again on Saturday too, which will help. It's never been about numbers for me, it is about enjoying it and enjoying what I do. If people enjoy what I do as well, then great."

Julie has had a spike of sales on Amazon since the episode aired this week.

To try and stay connected with her fans, Julie is now launching Zoom decor classes. To find out more, or to buy her book, go to https://juliejones.online.
