THE coronavirus pandemic has failed to stop the district’s leek growers from producing impressive results this year.
The Bowes Hotel Leek Club at Bardon Mill hosted it’s annual show, with stalwart Kenneth Makepeace crowned champion with leeks of 181.28 cu ins.
In second place was Geoff Dodd (151.75 cu ins), while Mick Dodd and Paul Dodd were third with efforts of 86.08 cu ins. Mick and Paul Dodd fared better in another competition, winning the Ian Dodd Memorial Trophy for best leeks under 100 cu.
The prize for most improved leeks in the show was won by David Foster. The highest place lady competitor was Nicola Charlton, while David Nicholson won the Wooden Leek Trophy.
The show also had a competition for onions, which was won by Jordan Reynolds. Entries by Jeanette Oliver were second and third.
